Perry purchased a former convent for $14.5 million from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. A group of nuns who used to live in the convent with the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary opposed the sale and tried instead to sell the property to another buyer, Dana Hollister.
Hollister reportedly planned to turn the property into a boutique hotel, while Perry wanted to turn the convent into a private home.
On Friday, a jury ruled in favor of Perry and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, upholding their agreement to sell. The two parties were awarded $5 million in legal fees and will have the chance to recover punitive damages for Hollister acting with "malice, oppression, or fraud" in the trial's second phase next month.
Now Katy Perry has a convent and Gilmore Girls' 2016 joke is relevant again.
